Driving Narrative Change
At INCANDI, we believe in recognizing the latent potential of communities often categorized as “marginalized”—including the urban poor, refugees, migrants, stateless individuals, and Indigenous peoples.
We view these groups not as “vulnerable populations” in need of aid, but as vital contributors and strategic assets to our societies.
They bring unique capabilities in adaptive leadership, crisis resilience, and cross-cultural innovation—capabilities that are essential for building more inclusive, sustainable, and future-ready systems.
Our work is grounded in the belief that resilience, adaptive leadership, and innovation already exist within these communities. Our role is to design the conditions where these capabilities can be recognized, connected, and translated into systemic change.
Our co-creative approach leverages arts, design thinking, and media to unlock and amplify these strengths. We move beyond storytelling—creating platforms where individuals engage directly with decision-makers.
By bridging these perspectives, we are not only making voices heard—we are actively redesigning the “operating system” of our cities and institutions to be more inclusive, adaptive, resilient and sustainable.
INCANDI was born from an unexpected encounter in Malaysia between our Founder, Kasumi from Japan and "Hassan" (a pseudonym) from Yemen.
Both individuals were alumni from "The Ship for World Youth Leadership Program", sponsored by the Japanese Government in the early 2000s. During this event, Hassan has proudly represented his country on the global stage.
However, during their latter unexpected encounter a decade later; Kasumi was shocked to discover that the war in Yemen has forced Hassan into refugee status - not because of any failure on his part, but solely due to unfortunate circumstances beyond his control.
Despite facing such grievous adversity; Hassan's leadership, generosity, and talent remained as strong as ever. Just as it has been a decade ago, before the war; perhaps even stronger.
Moved by Hassan’s resilience, Kasumi founded INCANDI believing that individuals like him deserve more than just a chance to survive—they deserve the opportunity to lead.
Today, INCANDI exists to prototype the social systems where leaders from all backgrounds can leverage their inner light to shape our collective future. We don't just share stories; we build the inclusive infrastructure needed to turn those stories into sustainable social impact.
This vision is translated into practice through our approach.
At INCANDI, we design place-based and participatory processes that connect lived experience with systems change. We move beyond traditional “helper–beneficiary” models, facilitating spaces for mutual unlearning and co-creation. We position communities not as recipients of support, but as Knowledge Partners with essential expertise in shaping inclusive and resilient systems.
1. Design:
Strategic Co-Design
Keywords: Systemic Design / Inclusive Governance / Urban Policy
"Beyond traditional consulting, we design inclusive systems that last." We embed inclusivity into organizational cultures and urban environments. By integrating systemic design with diverse perspectives, we help you build frameworks where every voice has the power to shape the future.
2. Transform:
Creative Immersive Labs
Keywords:Performing Arts / Cooking & Food / Media / Indigenous Community Engagement / Unlearning
"True innovation begins with the courage to unlearn." We go beyond the classroom to facilitate deep transformation through the senses. Using diverse mediums—from performing arts and traditional cooking to media storytelling and jungle trekking with deep indigenous community engagement—we create immersive environments where participants can unlearn biases, reconnect with nature, and foster empathy.
*Minimum 2-Day Immersive
3. Prototype:
Field Incubation
Keywords: Social Prototyping / Grassroots Innovation / Implementation
"Turning visionary ideas into tangible social impact." We move beyond theory to test and scale inclusive solutions in real-world settings. By prototyping alongside marginalized communities as equal experts, we bridge the gap between high-level strategy and grassroots action.
Why Our Approach Matters
1. Unlearn (From Observation to Integration): True transformation requires dismantling outdated mental models. We help participants integrate intense field experiences into their own decision-making and values.
2. Co-Create (Lived Experience as Expertise): We recognize refugees, migrants, and Indigenous communities as experts in resilience. We create a level playing field where cross-sector co-creation can truly flourish.
3. Implement (Beyond Service Delivery to System Change): We don't just provide training; we prototype inclusive systems. Our focus is on building "Civic Agency"—the capacity to actively shape the future of our cities.
This approach underpins both our immersive labs and our advisory work, allowing us to bridge field-based insights with policy dialogue, strategy design, and implementation.
01 FIELD-DRIVEN INQUIRY /
02 KNOWLEDGE PARTNERSHIP /
03 STRATEGIC TRANSFORMATION /
04 PROCESS DESIGN /
